The Earth, Over and Over again
There is a Jewish tradition that says that the earth has been made over and over again.
It is almost like an echo of what is written in the book of Psalms:
Psalm 102:26-27
26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: 27 But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.
Psalm 104:30
Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.
That is, the earth has a garment that can be worn out and renewed. It is almost as if these verses are begging to be interpreted as, well, it has happened before over and over again.
Jeremiah 4:23-26 also says that the earth was waste and empty, as a reference to Genesis 1:2, and there was no man, i.e. there were people, but suddenly no more.
Jer 4
23 I looked at the earth, and behold, it was formless and empty; and the heavens, and their light was gone; 24 I looked at the mountains, and behold, they trembled, and all the hills trembled; 25 I looked, and behold, it was without man, and all the birds of the air had fled; 26 I looked, and behold, the fruitful field was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were desolate before the LORD, because of his fierce anger.
A similar verse seemed to say the same thing in Isaiah:
Isaiah 45:18
For thus saith the LORD, the Creator of heaven; he is God, that formed the earth, that made it, that established it; he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD, and there is none else.
He created not the earth void and empty, neither did he make it like that.
Isaiah 24:1
Behold, the Lord maketh the earth void and waste, and turneth it upside down upon the face thereof, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof;
Same here, again an echo of what happened in Genesis 1.2.
In other words, the history of the earth is an age old, and not just 6000 years as some seem to have it.
If the earth were only 6000 years old, it almost begs the question: What has God done before?
I think it is a bit shallow to say that the earth is only 6000 years old, even from the scriptures.
No, the Bible does not mention any specific age, but simply as mentioned here, that it has been worn out and renewed, and that again and again.
