The Expression of "Continuation" of State or Action by a Compounded Use of Hayah
APPENDIX VIII (Reference: p. 47)
This construction is used to indicate "continuous habit", "incipient action", or "the continuation of a state". It points up very clearly the sense in which the verb is a verb of action - not merely of state, since even when it is used of a state it is given the rather special meaning of a deliberate continuation in that state.
In order to make the original verbal forms identifiable, the verb is written in capitals and the following participle of the associated verb in italics. For example, when followed by aparticiple:
Gen. 4. 17: "Cain WAS (occupied) in building. . . . "
Exod. 3. 1: "Moses WAS shepherding the flocks..."
Josh.10.26: "They WERE hanging upon the trees till evening"
I Sam. 2. 11: "The child WAS ministering unto the Lord".
I Sam. 18. 9: "Saul WAS eyeing David from that day forward"
I Ki. 5. 1: "For Hiram WAS always loving towards David".
I Ki. 13. 24: "His carcass WAS Lying cast in the way".
I Ki. 22. 35: "The king WAS propping himself up in his chariot".
Ezra 4.4: "The people of the land WERE weakening..."
Neh. 1. 4: "And I WAS fasting..."
Neh. 13. 26: "And he WAS indeed being Loved of his God".
As we have noted in connection with the use of in the Book of Job, the same basic construction is understood, but for dramatic effect the verb is deliberately omitted. Thus in Job 1. 16-18 the verb is missing at three places: (were) speaking, and (were) yet speaking (twice). See also:
Job 14. 17: "(is) being sealed up"
Job 18. 10: "(is) being laid"
Job 20.26: "(shall be) being hidden"
Job 36. 8: "If they (are) being bound"
And followed by an infinitive:
Gen. 15. 12: "and the sun WAS about to go down".
Josh. 2. 5: "and the gate WAS about to be shut"
II Chron.26.5: "And he WAS about to be seeking (ie. , began to seek) God .... "
Isa. 5. 5: "It SHALL BE (ie., come to be) eaten up"
